Beaver facts
Northern Mexico is the southern edge of the North American beaver's range. In Mexico it lives only in Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas.
Mexico lists the beaver as en peligro de extinción (endangered) under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, even though it is rated Least Concern worldwide.
Dams, water extraction, grazing and trapping have split the beavers of the Río Bravo (Rio Grande) basin into small, scattered populations.
Sonora's beavers belong to the subspecies Castor canadensis frondator. A 1999 survey found beaver sign at 14 sites along the upper Río Bavispe, among its cottonwoods and willows.
Mexico's protected-areas commission, CONANP, runs a dedicated species action programme (PACE) for the beaver.
In Spanish the beaver is el castor, from the same Latin root as castoreum, the scent the fur trade once prized.
